What we track today
31 governing bodies.
- 7 county commissions: Spokane, Yakima, Benton, Franklin, Walla Walla, Grant, Chelan
- 12 city councils: Spokane, Spokane Valley, Yakima, Kennewick, Richland, Pasco, Walla Walla, Wenatchee, Pullman, Moses Lake, Ephrata, Quincy
- 6 school boards: Spokane, Yakima, Pasco, Kennewick, Moses Lake, Wenatchee
- 2 public utility district commissions: Grant County PUD and Chelan County PUD
- 3 tribal governments: the Yakama Nation, the Spokane Tribe of Indians, and the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation
- 1 state legislature, covered for what it does to this side of the mountains
Not yet tracked: thirteen more counties, every other incorporated city, most school districts, every planning commission, all ports, every remaining public utility district, and all hospital, fire, irrigation and conservation districts. No count of the region's total governing bodies has been run, so we do not publish one.
Three cities, not one region
Spokane is a city of its own with a strong mayor and a seven-member council. The Tri-Cities are three separate incorporated cities, Kennewick, Richland and Pasco, each with its own council, its own clerk and its own rules. Yakima is a third place again, with its own council districts and the only 2.5-minute comment limit we found anywhere in this market.
If you are looking for your own government, go straight to who governs and find your city or county. Nothing here assumes that what is true in Spokane is true in Pasco, because it usually is not.
The state layer
Olympia is on the wrong side of the mountains for this audience, and statewide coverage is written from Seattle. The Legislature convenes on the second Monday of January under RCW 44.04.010, and its length alternates by year, which means the volume of decisions affecting Eastern Washington is very different in an odd year than an even one. See when they meet for what we verified and what we did not.
Why this exists
Every one of these bodies meets in public. Most of them stream it. Almost none of what is said in those rooms gets written down anywhere searchable, and the video that does exist cannot be searched at all.
